The Algorithm of Fortune: Engineering Systemic Serendipity

Last revised

On March 10, 2026, I was thinking about how preparation and relationships affect what we later call luck.

Thirteen practices from Ashwin Sanghi's book on creating good luck through networks, experimentation, awareness, and leverage.

Luck is not an algorithm, and no system can engineer serendipity. Some practices can still increase exposure or readiness:

  1. Build genuine relationships beyond immediate transactions.
  2. Protect enough attention to notice an unexpected opening.
  3. Run bounded experiments rather than waiting for certainty.
  4. Manage downside so one failed attempt does not remove the ability to continue.
  5. Reconsider assumptions that no longer fit the evidence.

Preparation can help someone use an opportunity. It does not explain every fortunate outcome or make misfortune a positioning failure.
