The Architecture of Certainty

Last revised

In June 2009, I was looking for ways to become more confident. I considered familiar practices: a positive attitude, social interaction, written goals, and breaking difficult work into smaller parts.

I no longer think confidence can be engineered into certainty. Uncertainty remains, even when preparation is strong.

What does help is more concrete:

  1. Compare current performance with your own earlier baseline when that comparison is useful.
  2. Write down the qualities or capabilities you intend to develop.
  3. Turn large goals into actions small enough to attempt and inspect.
  4. Test yourself in different environments without treating every response as a verdict on identity.
  5. Let repeated evidence, including failure, refine what you believe you can do.

Confidence need not become absolute. It can become better grounded.
