What I brought back from that room

Last revised

In July 2008, I spent ₹6,400 on a self-development course. I remember mocking both the cost and what felt to me like a cult-like atmosphere.

I also brought something back.

The course gave me a vocabulary for separating what happened from the story I attached to it. That distinction did not make interpretation disappear. It made interpretation easier to notice.

If someone says a sentence, the sentence is part of what happened. The intention I assign to it, the insult I hear in it, or the future I predict from it may be my story. That story can still matter. It can affect what I do next. But treating my interpretation as the event itself closes inquiry too early.

Another distinction concerned persistent complaints. I learned to ask what I was getting from a complaint I kept repeating. Sometimes the complaint pointed to a real problem. Sometimes repeating it allowed me to avoid a decision, a conversation, or my own part in the situation. I remain cautious about reducing every complaint to a personal racket. Power and circumstance are real. Still, the question has stayed useful.

The phrase empty and meaningless was harder. At first I heard nihilism. Later I understood a more practical possibility: meaning is not always waiting inside an event for me to discover it. I participate in making it.

That does not give me unlimited control. I cannot choose away loss, obligation, or consequence. Nor does every meaning work equally well. A meaning can open action, distort reality, protect an old identity, or make another person invisible.

Eighteen years later, I do not treat those distinctions as a complete philosophy. I treat them as tools I have continued to test.

The most durable lesson was not that I am free to invent any story I want. It was that I am responsible for noticing the story I am already living inside, and for examining what it makes possible.

A receipt for 6,400 rupees sits beside lenses that change how the same event is interpreted.
