The Architecture of Respect

Last revised

On March 23, 2026, I was reflecting on behaviours that can contribute to respect.

Social practices that build respect through presence, integrity, kindness, reliability, listening, and control of tone.

Respect is neither a script nor a guaranteed output. It is shaped by behaviour, role, history, culture, power, and the judgment of other people.

Several practices remain useful:

  1. Give a conversation undivided attention when possible.
  2. Avoid gossip and unnecessary domination of the room.
  3. Give sensitive feedback with care, while recognizing that public accountability can sometimes be necessary.
  4. Keep promises or renegotiate them early.
  5. Treat punctuality as one form of consideration, not a universal character test.
  6. Be courteous across differences in status and power.

Consistent conduct can earn trust. It does not entitle anyone to respect.
