The Integrity of the Build: Beyond the Shortcuts

Last revised

Good presentation cannot compensate for a system whose underlying logic, risks, or defects have not been understood.

Reusing code, frameworks, or strategies is not itself a shortcut. The problem is using them without knowing their assumptions, obligations, and failure modes.

A build audit can ask:

  1. What important defect or debt is hidden by the status report?
  2. Which reused component is understood, tested, licensed, and appropriate here?
  3. What must be fixed before release, and what can be recorded for later work?
  4. What harm follows from delay compared with shipping the known limitation?
  5. Who has the expertise and authority to make that tradeoff?

Integrity does not require perfection or contempt for deadlines. It requires making limitations visible and choosing deliberately.
