Theory U names three familiar barriers to attentive inquiry: the voices of judgment, cynicism, and fear.
These are metaphors for patterns, not an internal committee or survival system. Judgment can close inquiry, but it can also protect standards. Fear can distort a choice, but it can also signal real danger. Cynicism may prevent vulnerability, or it may express evidence that trust has been damaged.
A short practice can help:
- Label the reaction without treating the label as a diagnosis.
- Separate fact, interpretation, uncertainty, and risk.
- Listen for information the first reaction excluded.
- Decide which concern should be suspended and which requires action.
Clarity does not come from ignoring inner dialogue or waiting for a sovereign signal. It comes from examining competing signals with context and care.
