Distributed Intelligence: Solving Beyond the Ego

Last revised

Complex problems often improve when more than one relevant perspective can examine them.

That does not make intelligence a network property in every case, and sharing a problem does not guarantee a breakthrough or reduce stress. Privacy, competence, timing, and decision rights still matter.

For a problem being held by one person:

  1. Clarify what can be shared and with whom.
  2. Ask others how they define the problem before asking for solutions.
  3. State the outcome, constraints, and decision owner.
  4. Invite perspectives from people close to the work and, when useful, from outside it.
  5. Synthesize the evidence rather than forcing consensus.

Leadership sometimes requires giving an answer. It also requires building a team that can think without waiting for one person to do all the thinking.
