Do not decide only from the storm

Last revised

Pressure can reveal that something must end. It can also narrow what we can see.

In the middle of a conflict, a failed project, or a relationship that has become exhausting, departure can feel like the only honest response. Sometimes that feeling is accurate. Sometimes it is the nervous system asking for immediate relief from a situation that still needs a considered decision.

The distinction matters because an exit can be both necessary and badly executed. We may leave the right situation at the wrong moment, without protecting people, obligations, information, or options that still matter. We may also stay too long because we keep treating a structural problem as a temporary storm.

When possible, stabilize the immediate situation before making an irreversible exit. Reduce the temperature. Write down what actually happened. Separate a recurring pattern from one difficult event. Identify which obligations survive the decision. Ask what becomes harder to repair once the exit is announced. A short pause is useful when it creates a clearer view, not when it merely postpones what we already know.

Reversibility is a practical guide. If a small step can create distance without closing every door, take that step first. If the decision will affect employees, partners, customers, family, or finances, give the consequences the attention they deserve. The aim is not to make departure painless. It is to avoid adding preventable damage to an already difficult choice.

There is an important boundary to this advice. Sometimes leaving immediately is the responsible decision. Safety comes first. Abuse, credible threats, coercion, or an acute health risk do not require a performance of calm deliberation before action.

For everything else, try not to decide only from the storm. Let the emotion report what it knows. Then make the decision from the clearest view still available.
