The Knoster model is a useful prompt for examining change through vision, skills, incentives, resources, and an action plan.
Its familiar chart associates missing elements with confusion, anxiety, resistance, frustration, and false starts. Those associations are diagnostic possibilities, not predictable equations. Emotions are not error codes, and the same response can have many causes.
When change stalls, ask:
- Is the purpose understood and open to challenge?
- Do people have the relevant skills and support?
- Do incentives align without reducing motivation to pay alone?
- Are time, tools, authority, and staffing adequate?
- Is ownership and sequencing clear?
Use the model to broaden inquiry, then verify the cause with the people and evidence involved.
