The Founder Is the Loop

Last revised

On April 29, 2026, I was thinking about founders who described an AI strategy while remaining personally distant from the tools and decisions involved.

Delegation is necessary in a company. Abdication is different. A founder does not need to be the strongest technical practitioner, but a consequential shift cannot be governed responsibly through summaries alone.

The useful distinction is between an open loop and a closed one. In an open loop, work is completed and the evidence disappears into meetings, messages, or individual memory. In a closed loop, execution produces records that can inform the next decision.

That can mean capturing decisions, preserving useful artifacts, examining customer feedback, and making important knowledge retrievable. It does not mean feeding every conversation into an automated system. Privacy, consent, security, and context determine what should be retained and who may query it.

Personal use helps a founder understand where a tool is capable, where it fails, and what still requires human judgment. It does not make personal leadership the only valid model. Teams need domain expertise, authority to challenge the founder, and room to decide how the technology affects their work.

Token usage is also not a substitute for capital allocation. A higher API bill may indicate productive automation or simple waste. Headcount is not coordination overhead by definition, and one builder with agents does not universally replace a team. The comparison must include quality, risk, maintenance, and the labour displaced or newly required.

Split illustration contrasting a person who buys an AI strategy with one who designs and owns the AI system.

The durable point is practical fluency. Leaders should understand enough of the systems they govern to question claims, recognise trade-offs, and build feedback into the work. They can delegate implementation without delegating responsibility for the consequences.
