The body is part of the work.
This is easy to forget when work is described mainly through thought, judgment, ambition, and output. The language makes the person sound separate from the physical conditions through which all of those things happen.
They are not separate.
Sleep, movement, food, illness, pain, medication, stress, and recovery can affect how a day is experienced. They can influence attention, patience, energy, and the ability to stay with a difficult problem. The effect is not identical for every person, and good health does not guarantee good judgment. But neglect has a cost, even when the bill arrives slowly.
I have often treated maintenance as something to fit around the real work. Physical fitness is one of the practices through which I have tested a different relationship with that maintenance. The old hierarchy eventually defeats itself. Work expands into the space reserved for recovery, and then reduced capacity makes the same work take longer.
The answer is not to turn physical discipline into another contest. Health advice can easily become moral judgment, especially when it ignores disability, illness, caregiving, access, age, or the different limits people carry. A person is not more worthy because they wake earlier, train harder, or display more energy.
The narrower point is stewardship.
What conditions help this particular body support the work being asked of it? What is being borrowed from tomorrow to complete today? Which pattern is sustainable, and which one survives only because the consequences have not arrived yet?
For me, physical fitness is one part of maintenance. More broadly, maintenance may also mean sleep, medical care, rehabilitation, stillness, boundaries, or admitting that the current load is too high. The correct practice depends on the person and the condition.
Serious work does not happen outside the body. Caring for the body is not proof of seriousness, but ignoring it eventually changes what the work can ask from us.
