Binary labels can hide important detail.
A project may miss one objective while producing useful evidence. A person may behave poorly in one situation without becoming a “bad” person. At the same time, some decisions do require a clear yes, no, safe, unsafe, acceptable, or unacceptable.
Before settling on a label:
- Describe the specific behaviour or result.
- Identify the decision that must be made now.
- Consider more than one plausible interpretation when the evidence permits it.
- State what further evidence could change the conclusion.
- Decide when delay carries more risk than uncertainty.
Keeping a question open is useful only while it improves judgment. Ambiguity should not become an excuse to avoid a necessary decision.
