The Nuremberg Defense: Why "I Was Just Following Orders" is a Death Sentence

Last revised

“I was following orders” does not remove responsibility for deception or harm.

The comparison with the Nuremberg trials is disproportionate to an ordinary workplace dispute. The practical question remains: what should you do when someone with authority asks you to hide a material fact or alter a number?

  1. Pause and establish exactly what is being requested.
  2. Explain the risk to the client, organization, and people involved.
  3. Offer an honest alternative.
  4. Document the instruction and response when appropriate.
  5. Use the relevant internal, professional, or legal reporting route. Seek qualified advice when the stakes require it.

Leaving may become necessary, but it is not costless or always the first safe step. Integrity includes refusing deception and responding with proportionate judgment.
