A product remains legally and operationally owned even when users adopt it deeply. Adoption is not a psychological transfer of ownership.
The useful distinction is between what the maker built and what the user can now do.
To examine adoption:
- Identify the recurring problem the product solves.
- Observe sustained use rather than downloads alone.
- Ask users what role the product plays in their work or life.
- Reduce friction without manipulating habit or hiding important choices.
- Explain the creator’s responsibility for reliability, privacy, support, and change.
Marketing can create awareness, and branding can help people understand and trust a product. Neither should overpower utility. Users may call a tool “mine” without surrendering their data, agency, or right to leave.
