“Do what you love” has never been sufficient career advice for me. It makes passion sound like a clear signal that arrives before the work and remains steady afterward.
My experience has often moved in the other direction. I begin with curiosity or responsibility. I stay long enough to become more capable. As I understand the work, I notice more of its depth and sometimes care about it more. Competence can create enjoyment because it expands what I am able to see and do.
Sometimes passion follows practice.
That is not a law. People can become excellent at work they dislike. They can love a craft whose conditions damage them. They can remain beginners because time, money, health, access, or care responsibilities limit practice. A person may also discover, after honest effort, that a field is simply a poor fit.
The useful correction is to stop demanding constant excitement as proof that a choice is right. Every substantial craft contains repetition, frustration, and maintenance. The image of the work and the daily practice of it are different things. Staying through the unglamorous part can reveal whether the interest has roots.
But endurance is not automatically virtuous. Before telling myself to persist, I want to know what I am building: skill, contribution, income, freedom, belonging, or only the ability to tolerate an unhealthy arrangement. Pride in disciplined work should not become a reason to remain where the cost is no longer justified.
I now look for a workable combination rather than a perfect passion. Is there enough interest to pay attention? Are the conditions humane enough to continue? Is practice producing useful capability? Does the work serve something I can respect? What would I lose by leaving, and what might I recover?
Passion may begin the work, follow the work, change its object, or never arrive. It is one source of energy among several, not a command.
