A rehearsal can reveal a missing step before that omission matters. Imagine preparing to lead a difficult project review: the opening sounds clear in your head, but speaking it aloud reveals that you have not decided what answer you need from the room.
That is a useful result from rehearsal. It does not require claiming that the nervous system has been pre-compiled.
Rehearse the interruption
Walk through the action far enough to encounter its dependencies. What information must be available? Where could someone reasonably disagree? What will you do if the expected response does not arrive?
A perfect imagined performance can conceal the very uncertainty that makes the real situation difficult. Include one plausible interruption and practice choosing a response, rather than memorizing an uninterrupted script.
Compare rehearsal with the event
For one ordinary presentation or handoff, write down two gaps the rehearsal exposed. Afterward, note which gaps mattered and which unexpected condition required adaptation.
Judge the rehearsal by what it helped you notice and prepare. Feeling fluent is not evidence that the plan is sound.
For technical or safety-critical procedures, follow the relevant training and approval requirements. An informal mental run-through does not replace supervised practice or demonstrate competence.
This is a proposed preparation exercise. It makes no general claim about anxiety reduction or performance gains. Its value is the specific omission or dependency you discover early enough to address.
