Regret can be one perspective in a difficult decision, but it cannot make uncertainty disappear.
Imagining a future self may reveal what today’s optimization overlooks. That future self is still imaginary, and a deathbed test can create false certainty around choices whose consequences remain unknown.
For a consequential decision:
- Identify what is reversible and what is not.
- Consider likely benefits, harms, duties, and opportunity costs.
- Notice social pressure without pretending it can be removed entirely.
- Ask what several plausible future selves might value.
- Decide with the available evidence and record what could trigger review.
An absolute yes is not required for every meeting, project, or commitment. Many responsible choices are made with mixed feelings and honest uncertainty.
