Rooted Autonomy: The Law of the Tree

Last revised

The tree and creeper metaphor can illuminate autonomy, but it can also turn legitimate support into weakness.

People and organizations depend on others. Skills, judgment, integrity, savings, documentation, and relationships can make that dependence more resilient without creating total self-sufficiency.

A rootedness review can ask:

  1. Where am I waiting for direction I could responsibly provide?
  2. Where do I need collaboration, care, or qualified expertise?
  3. Which capability would reduce a fragile single dependency?
  4. How can I contribute value without making myself indispensable?
  5. What responsibility can I assume without carrying weight that belongs elsewhere?

Strong roots do not draw their own water. They work through a larger living system.
