Founder dependence can look like strength for a long time.
The founder remembers why a decision was made, notices when the work is slipping, carries the difficult relationships, and resolves exceptions faster than anyone else. The company moves because one person can hold many parts of it at once.
That capacity may be valuable. It is also a risk.
The question is not whether a company can function with no leadership. It cannot. The question is whether its important standards and decisions are available to people beyond the leader who first formed them.
I would look for three things.
First, can someone else make a sound decision without imitating the founder's personality? A principle that exists only as instinct is difficult to transfer. Writing down the reasoning helps, but the real test is whether another person can use it in a situation that was not anticipated.
Second, can the organization notice weak work without turning people into enemies? The earlier version of this note compared a poor hire to a virus that a healthy culture should reject. That is dramatic and dehumanizing. A better organization makes expectations visible, gives feedback early, and acts when the gap remains. It does not need an immune-system story to take performance seriously.
Third, does the organization learn from errors? Not every mistake needs a new process. Too much process can become another way of avoiding judgment. But a repeated failure deserves examination. Was the decision unclear? Was information missing? Did an incentive reward the wrong behavior? What should change before the next attempt?
Continuity is not created by removing the founder from the picture. It is created by making more of the work understandable, discussable, and transferable.
The real test is modest: when the central person steps away, can the team still see what good work requires, make a reasonable decision, and learn from what happens next?
