Prediction tries to tell us what will happen. Rehearsal asks how we might respond.
The distinction is useful before a consequential meeting, negotiation, launch, or decision. We can spend hours trying to forecast the exact sequence of events, even when the important variables depend on other people. That effort creates an impression of control, but it often produces a brittle plan. The first unexpected response can make the entire forecast irrelevant.
Rehearsal has a different purpose. It identifies the difficult parts and gives us a few responses worth practicing. What is the strongest objection? Which fact would change the decision? What happens if the preferred option disappears? Where might emotion outrun judgment? Which actions are reversible, and which ones require a deliberate pause?
This is not about scripting every sentence. A memorized performance can prevent us from listening to what is actually happening. Useful rehearsal prepares principles, boundaries, questions, and options. It makes the structure familiar while leaving the conversation open.
The same approach applies to failure. Instead of predicting that a project will succeed or collapse, examine a few plausible ways it could go wrong. Decide which signals would matter, who needs to know, and what can be contained early. The preparation may never be used. Its value is that a foreseeable problem does not have to become an improvised crisis.
There is a stopping point. Rehearsal can become another form of postponement when every imagined scenario creates three more. Once the major risks, decision thresholds, and first responses are clear, further simulation may add detail without adding readiness.
The exercise will not remove surprise. It should not. Reality will contribute people, timing, and information that no model contained. Rehearse enough to reduce avoidable hesitation, then enter the real situation prepared to notice what is different.
