What remains when a role changes

Last revised

Roles can become containers for identity.

“Founder,” “project manager,” “developer,” and “service provider” tell other people something about the work. Over time, they can also tell me too much about who I am. When a role changes or disappears, I may mistake the loss of the container for the loss of every capability built inside it.

Some things do travel. Judgment, relationships, ways of learning, and practiced skills can remain available after a title ends. Remembering that has helped me enter unfamiliar work without treating myself as empty.

Portability is not the same as essence. A capability formed in one setting depends on tools, colleagues, language, reputation, money, access, and local knowledge. Moving it elsewhere changes what it can do. Success in one system does not prove a universal mechanism of impact.

I therefore ask two kinds of questions during a transition.

What can I carry? I name specific practices rather than flattering identities: framing a problem, noticing a pattern, building trust over time, making a decision with incomplete information, or explaining complex work clearly.

What must I rebuild? I name the dependencies and gaps: domain knowledge, permission, credibility, partners, regulation, customer understanding, or financial runway. These are not inferior vessels. They are part of the work.

There is also a personal question. A role may hold community, history, status, and meaning, not only utility. Leaving it can involve grief even when the change is chosen. Fluidity should not become a demand to feel untouched by loss.

I want enough continuity to recognize myself and enough looseness to be changed by the next context. The aim is not to become formless. It is to avoid confusing one form with the full extent of what I can become.

A jar and its contents are not enemies. Sometimes the container protects what matters. Sometimes it limits it. The decision is to see both before I pour anything away.

A person carries some practical tools between contexts while rebuilding other supports.
