There is tension between what is present and what I believe must be present. Some "musts" are inherited scripts. Others express duty, safety, law, or a standard worth keeping.
The task is not to eliminate every requirement. It is to examine which requirement fits reality and which asks a person to perform an identity that is not theirs.
The nature audit
1. Name the must
Write the expectation precisely. Who holds it, and what purpose does it serve?
2. Describe the is
What capability, limitation, preference, role, or condition is actually present? "Nature" should not become a permanent label that prevents learning.
3. Examine the gap
Can the person grow into the requirement with support? Should the role change? Is the expectation itself unnecessary or harmful?
4. Preserve agency
Do not redesign another person as a resource without their participation. Acceptance includes hearing how they understand their own strengths and responsibilities.
5. Keep proof proportionate
Some work requires evidence, accountability, or external review. The urge to prove personal worth can be released without abandoning proof of competence or outcome.
Integrity is not simply acting from an essential self. It is bringing values, actions, capabilities, and responsibilities into an honest relationship with present conditions.
