In 2012, I wrote about the time required to build a standard and how quickly one careless act can damage it.
I would no longer describe excellence as an on-or-off switch. Work contains constraints, tradeoffs, mistakes, and opportunities to repair them. A strong standard is visible in how those realities are handled.
Ask:
- Did I understand and accept responsibility for the work?
- Did I report what the evidence supports, including uncertainty?
- Did I protect the important outcome without dismissing legitimate concerns as noise?
- If I cut a corner or made a mistake, did I disclose and repair it?
Reputation is not perfectly fragile, nor is it beyond the market’s reach. It is built through repeated work and honest correction.
