The people and product loop
People and product are often discussed as competing priorities. In practice, each shapes the other.
A capable team can improve a weak product. A demanding product can help a capable team grow. But a depleted team eventually damages the product, and work without enough meaning or difficulty eventually loses good people.
The relationship is a loop, not a choice between two sides.
People are part of the production system
Deadlines can sometimes require an exceptional effort. When exceptional effort becomes the normal operating model, the organization is borrowing from its future.
The cost appears later through mistakes, delayed maintenance, avoidable turnover, and decisions made with too little attention. A milestone may still be met, but the system that produced it becomes weaker.
The product gives the team something to grow against
A pleasant workplace is not enough. Good people also need a worthwhile problem, clear standards, and room to exercise judgment.
If the work is permanently shallow, capable people either disengage or leave. If the work is difficult but nobody has meaningful ownership, difficulty becomes exhaustion rather than growth.
Inspect the loop
Three questions help expose an imbalance:
- Are product commitments repeatedly being met by consuming the team's health?
- Is the team learning and gaining responsibility as the product develops?
- Are we hiring people to complete tasks, or people who can eventually own outcomes?
There is no stable product without a functioning team, and no strong team that can remain strong without consequential work. Management has to protect both sides of that loop.
