Value offered before a request for return can change the quality of a relationship. I think of this as feedforward: contributing attention, clarity, an introduction, or a useful observation without treating every exchange as an immediate transaction.
The idea is easy to inflate into a promise of abundance. I do not think generosity guarantees reciprocity, opportunity, or wealth. Some contributions will not return anything, and boundaries still matter.
The generative shift
Scarcity can narrow attention. When I feel that money, talent, time, or recognition is in short supply, I may protect what I have and miss ways to create value with someone else.
Feedforward asks a different question: what can I contribute here that is useful, proportionate, and freely chosen?
The practice
1. Review the relationship
Look at an important working relationship. What useful contribution have you made recently without attaching an immediate request?
2. Offer something specific
Share an insight, make a relevant introduction, improve a process, or give careful attention. Do not assume you know what the other person needs. Ask when the contribution would create work, obligation, or intrusion.
3. Release the hidden invoice
Notice whether the gift carries an unspoken demand for repayment. If it does, make the exchange explicit instead of calling it generosity.
4. Keep the boundary
Feedforward is not limitless availability. Give what you can offer without resentment, self-neglect, or manipulation.
The practice can reduce extraction in the relationship and make your own contribution deliberate. It does not guarantee that a harvest will return.
