When visibility is no longer required

Some work depends too much on the continued visibility of the person who built it.

The dependency may be operational. Decisions stop when the founder is absent. Relationships exist only through one person. Quality depends on their direct inspection.

It may also be narrative. The work receives attention because its creator is constantly explaining, promoting, defending, and representing it. When that visibility stops, interest disappears with it.

Neither condition is automatically wrong. Early work often needs a visible advocate. A founder may be the clearest expression of an idea before the organization has developed its own language, evidence, and trusted relationships. Hiding too early can look like independence while leaving the work without a responsible voice.

The problem is permanent dependency.

A useful test is to step away in degrees.

Can someone else make the ordinary decisions? Can the work be understood without a personal explanation? Do customers, readers, or partners still receive value when the creator is not present? Can quality survive without inspection at every point?

This is not a demand for invisibility. Some people choose a public role because teaching, writing, selling, or convening is part of the work itself. The question is whether visibility is being chosen or continuously required to prevent collapse.

Privacy becomes different under those conditions. It is no longer a dramatic disappearance or a rejection of the audience. It becomes the ability to decide when to be visible because the work does not need constant performance to prove that it exists.

There is also a personal test. If attention disappears, does the work still feel worth doing? A project built mainly around recognition may struggle when recognition becomes quiet.

The aim is not to become unnecessary to everything we build. It is to remove the dependencies that exist only because we never designed for anyone, or anything, to continue without us.
