Keep updating the map

Last revised

Curiosity does not guarantee wealth, relevance, or good judgment.

It does something more modest and more useful: it helps us update a view of the world that would otherwise become stale. Markets move, tools change, and people reveal information that an old model cannot contain. A conclusion that was sensible five years ago may now describe a landscape that no longer exists.

The danger is not having a model. We need models to decide. The danger is forgetting that the model was built from limited evidence at a particular time. Once it becomes part of our identity, contradictory information can feel like a personal attack. We then defend the map even while the ground keeps changing.

Curiosity interrupts that defense. It asks what has changed, which assumption no longer holds, and what the person closest to the problem can see that we cannot. It also asks whether an apparent change is merely noise. Updating every belief in response to every new signal produces confusion, not learning.

This is why curiosity needs discipline. Seek evidence that could genuinely alter a decision. Return to primary sources when a summary seems too convenient. Spend time with people whose incentives and experiences differ from your own. Keep a record of what you believed and why, so that revision does not become a story in which you were always right.

There is no shame in retaining an old conclusion when new evidence is weak. There is also no integrity in preserving it because changing your mind would be awkward. The purpose of a map is to help us move through the territory, not to protect the reputation of the cartographer.

Curiosity can become consumption without consequence: another book, feed, conversation, or tool that never changes a choice. Its practical value appears when something is updated: a question, a plan, an assumption, or a boundary.

Yesterday's map may still be useful. Keep it only as long as it continues to match the ground.
