The Vacuum Law: Why Silence is Always Interpreted as Failure.

Last revised

Silence leaves room for interpretation. Under pressure, clients and colleagues may fill that gap with concern.

That is not a universal psychological law, and communication is not half of every job. But predictable updates can reduce avoidable uncertainty, especially when a deadline or dependency is at risk.

Establish a useful rhythm:

  1. Agree on when updates are expected.
  2. Report material change, including bad news, early enough for people to respond.
  3. When a deadline is at risk, name the cause, the response, and the next check-in.
  4. Send a “no change” update only when the agreed rhythm or the risk makes it useful.

More communication is not always better. The standard is enough signal for the people affected to make sound decisions.
