Past investment deserves evidence, not automatic loyalty or automatic rejection.
Peter Drucker’s useful question is often paraphrased as: knowing what you know now, would you begin this again? A “no” does not by itself settle what should happen next. Ending a project, employment relationship, or personal relationship has obligations and consequences that a clean-sheet thought experiment can hide.
A periodic review can still ask:
- What value does this continue to create?
- What has changed since the commitment began?
- Can the problem be repaired, redesigned, or bounded?
- What would ending it cost other people as well as me?
- What evidence would justify continuing or stopping?
History is not a prison. It is part of the decision.
